Artifacts in the Closet

My closet is a mess. No, seriously.  I’m taking a break from a clutter/clothes purge.  Ever notice how clutter always, always always gets worse before it gets better? So far I’ve placed about 50 items into two lawn-size trash bags, destined for charity.  I found many lumpy sweaters that I never wore before as well as a “springy” dress that I bought on a whim three years ago…and have not yet worn outside the privacy of my closet.  Every time I put it on, I feel like an over-iced cupcake.  Or a clown. I’ll file this one in the “what … Continue reading Artifacts in the Closet

Insurance Irony

The new health insurance law has me all tangled up in knots in unexpected ways. Today I joined the ranks of others who have been denied health insurance due to pre-existing conditions, and I feel somehow demeaned. Gross. Unworthy.  Perhaps the executives at Big Insurance would like to redline me, as the characters did in Water for Elephants?  Just throw me off this train, and there will be no need for health insurance. The entire process of applying for private insurance was cumbersome and intrusive, and now I learn jumping through those hoops was all for naught.  At least for … Continue reading Insurance Irony

You Are His Favorite

I’ve been noticing the extraordinary all week.  This faded rose called out to me to take its photo last night.  I like the beauty that remains despite the age of the flower.  As I get older myself (ahem), I’ve grown to appreciate the gentle, extraordinary beauty that is found in faded flowers, faded jeans, and faded hair. Speaking of the extraordinary, an extraordinary encounter at church this past Sunday has held me enthralled and utterly enchanted.  I feel as if I am falling in love with the Lord all over again! During worship, my daughter became emotional.  All the angst of … Continue reading You Are His Favorite

This blog is good….er, propitious

Nearly every summer day I drive by our neighborhood elementary school on my way to and from various errands.  Each time I have to fight the urge to climb out of my car, stalk up to the marquee, and rearrange letters. Have a safe and fun summer.” is the message on the marquee. My contention with this sign is that both adjectives used are boring and bland.  In IEW, we called those kinds of words “banned words” and did not let our students use them.  Other banned adjectives were: bad, ugly, sad, mad, and so on.  If I had a … Continue reading This blog is good….er, propitious

Words from My Father

Many words from my father still echo in the passages of my mind.  I hear them and heed them and find myself passing along their wisdom to my own daughter.  Here are some of my favorites, just in time for Father’s Day.  Thank you, Dad, for always creating your own excitement. Good Night, Sleep Tight, and Say Your Prayers. I still pray before sleeping, Dad, thanks to habits formed when I was young. Rise and Be Dull. This phrase became the standard wake-up announcement, spoken just after a horrible blast from an old Army trumpet and accompanied by a tug … Continue reading Words from My Father
