Fitbit Motivator

Physical Education was my worst subject in school.  I hated everything about it — the smell of the gym, the sound of thirty basketballs slamming against the floors, basketballs flying out of nowhere and hitting my head, being the last one chosen for teams, every single time in every single sport, never being able to serve the volleyball over the net, the Texas heat, sweat, tripping over my own feet… So it’s no surprise that as an adult the mere idea of “working out” is fraught with trepidation and even a hint of danger (at least around flying objects, such … Continue reading Fitbit Motivator

Avenue P

I feel a bit like I’m stuck in a time warp.  Three and a half years ago we lost our Dalmatian Shiner after a long battle with various aging issues.  He stopped chasing the ball. He creaked and groaned and grumbled and was in constant pain from arthritis in his spine and hips.  He began pooping everywhere, even in his sleep, unable to control the most basic of body functions.  We treated him with a range of medications, from homeopathic to traditional, but finally his quality of his life (and ours), not to mention the cleanliness of our home, brought … Continue reading Avenue P

Saving Bella

Our Bella has been a very sick puppy this week.  Right on the heels of recovering from a nasty bout of Kennel Cough, she developed an autoimmune disease called juvenile cellulitis…or, as it is commonly known, puppy strangles. I’ve read more about this condition than I care to recount.  I am glad I have a sharp veterinarian who diagnosed her illness quickly because without treatment it can be fatal. How It Began At first I thought Bella had been bitten or stung by an insect or a snake.  On Thursday of last week she had what looked like styes … Continue reading Saving Bella

Savoring Joy

Today was my daughter’s first day of eighth grade.  When I picked her up from her CC Challenge B class, she greeted me with words that filled my heart with J-O-Y: I LOVE CC! So went Day 1, Week one of the thirty week program.  She’s especially excited about Latin.  I do believe my child will become a linguistic specialist working for the CIA or MI5 one day.  Hanging out with all the Challenge kids at lunch was another highlight of her day, as was working out the details of the costumes the kids plan to wear to the midnight … Continue reading Savoring Joy

Funky Style

Snip. Snip. That’s the sound of my apron strings being severed, one at a time. Today my almost-fourteen-year-old-going-on-thirty-four girl child had an appointment to get her hair trimmed.  Her first day of Classical Conversations is Monday, and I figured it would be nice to get those curls evened out.  We talked about styles on the way to the hairdresser, and I distinctly remembering advising her to keep it at the same length..but perhaps vary the style…add some long bangs, frame the face, etc.  However, I told her, “It’s your hair and your head!  You can make your own decisions.” After … Continue reading Funky Style
