God of This City

Today in church we revisited the hard-hitting book of James. Our pastor called us out — in a nation where 82% of the people profess to be Christians, how much of that profession is true? True faith occurs when we start acting like we believe what we say we believe. We are God’s workmanship — we are the pottery he created — and he has a special purpose for each one of us. If we keep on living the way we were living before we were saved — if there is no discernible change in the way we behave Monday … Continue reading God of This City

Heart Trouble

Corruption? That’s a heart problem. Pork-barrel politics? Another heart problem. Inability to vote yes or no, only present? Yup, a heart problem. Name-calling? Heart problem. Stagnation and indecision? Heart problem. Greed? Heart problem. Now is the time for Christians to band together in one body to pray like we’ve never prayed before. It is way past time for us to pray for our President, our Presidential candidates, our congressmen, our senators, their aides and assistants, the President’s cabinet, leaders on Wall Street, leaders on Main Street, and each other. This fiasco has gone way beyond who will get elected this … Continue reading Heart Trouble

Bearing Up After Ike

It’s so difficult to put into words the devastation faced by those who are living out their lives in Hurricane Ike’s wake. So many families are in agony, waiting for some word on the homes they evacuated. Others are part of the four million dealing with life without electric power or drinkable water. They stand in lines for hours for one bag of ice. Suddenly, their lives are cut down to the quick: life becomes about survival. Surviving the floods. Surviving the sweltering heat. Surviving another meal of peanut butter on crackers and cold, canned soup. My family in Houston … Continue reading Bearing Up After Ike

I Don’t Like Ike

Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits’ end. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves … Continue reading I Don’t Like Ike

A Girl’s Best Friend

Today I had to leave our beloved twelve year old Dalmatian at the vet. He’s been ill the past three days; he can’t hold down any food. Twelve is a long life for a breed of dog whose average life span is about eight years old. Despite being so sick, this dog of mine is as happy as he can be. His tail thumps and he still wants to follow me everywhere I go — this even though his hips are so arthritic he can no longer climb up on the couch easily or jump on the bed or even … Continue reading A Girl’s Best Friend
