At Week’s End

I’ve run the gamut in the homeschool race.  When I first began five years ago, I set it up much like I set up my classroom when I taught in the schools: we started our day at a certain time and took a certain amount of time to complete each subject. Now that I am a “grown up” homeschooler, I am much more relaxed in my approach.  A wise homeschooling mom of eighteen years whose three older children have all made National Merit Scholar told me not to worry with all the subjects and projects.  Reading good books and a … Continue reading At Week’s End

Wanting to be back

Yesterday my daughter told me — again — that she wants her mom back.  I wish with all my heart that I could have me back, too. We had a math crisis in the morning complete with tears, book thumping, and dramatic prostrations across the floor…and that was just me!  Seriously, the two of us rubbed each other the wrong way because she had a question that I just could not answer.  She was not satisfied with “that’s just the rule” about order of operations and wanted to know WHY the order of operations matters.  My own brain just about … Continue reading Wanting to be back

Meandering through the week

It’s rather difficult to wrap up a week of homeschool that did not feel as if it was filled with enough…school! There are times that I fall into despair about homeschooling.  It happens to most of us, and I know it will pass.  But homeschooling while having health issues is a whole different journey. We began our school week at my parent’s house out in the country.  It was truly delightful to be out in East Texas where the pollen turned my black car green, the dogwood tree blossoms were past their peak, my dad’s roses bloomed on the trellis, … Continue reading Meandering through the week

That’s a wrap

This is my second of what I hope will be many Weekly Roundups. This week our homeschool adventure has been “all memory master, all the time!”  We’ve focused on reviewing and memorizing our Classical Conversations curriculum.  This is my daughter’s last year in Foundations and her last to try for Memory Master. What is a Memory Master?  A student who achieves Memory Master is one who has memorized over 400 pieces of information.  Students are put through intensive oral “proofs” where they are quizzed by a parent, by a different adult, by their tutor, and finally by the CC director. … Continue reading That’s a wrap

Weekly Wrap-Up

I saw a great idea on a homeschooling blog that I decided to try for myself.  The idea is to post a weekly wrap-up of your homeschool week’s activities.  It’s always fun to get ideas from each other! This wrap-up must begin the way we strive to begin our lessons every day: with scripture.  We are reading through the book of John.  However, we found inspiration for that dreaded four-letter word, math, when my brother pointed out that it would be helpful to maintain an eternal perspective.  Colossians 1:16-17, in particular, tells how Jesus is in all of creation: 16 … Continue reading Weekly Wrap-Up
