Give Us This Day Our Daily (gluten-free) Bread…

Today I almost heard the angels sing.

Yesterday I started a two week experiment with a gluten-free diet.  The timing was not the greatest since I also traveled to deep East Texas in the middle of nowhere for a few days.  I figured I’d just endure a few days with no bread or cereals or sweets or anything else worth living for while I visited my parents.  This diet is particularly troublesome for me because I am a snacker.  I eat small amounts several times a day — yes, like a bird.  Who wants to snack on meat? :0)

I was feeling full but a bit depressed this morning after my breakfast of eggs, bacon, and half of a KIND bar.  I missed my biscuits, waffles, pancakes, and toast!  I did not in my wildest dreams expect to come across gluten free foods here in the deep woods.  So, when I came across these products, I could have sworn I heard the angels singing, and I felt so grateful — and thankful — that God provides:

I can identify with the cartoon guy on the Chex box.  Can’t you see he’s doing the happy dance?  That was me. In Wal-Mart. On a very busy Wednesday.  I’ll probably show up on that “People of Wal-Mart” website!

It is so comforting to know that God provides for us, even in the little things.  The salesclerk in the cereal aisle pointed me to the bakery aisle and proudly showed me the brownie and biscuit mix that they had just started offering.  You know, I’ve had some anxiety about this diet.  It never occurred to me — until now — to pray for guidance and wisdom or for products.  But God knew just what I needed, and I am certain that today’s discovery of these convenience foods was not a fluke or a coincidence. Maybe they’ve been on the shelves for weeks now, but today, I was meant to find them just like the Israelites were meant to find their manna.

I’m reminded of the Lord’s Prayer:

…give us this day our daily bread…

and I look at my new options and can’t help but smile and chuckle in awe and thanksgiving.  For my gluten free daily bread (biscuits) has been provided…not at the health food stores, not at Sprouts, not at Whole Foods, not at Central Market…but at Wal-Mart!
