Words

A hot cast iron skillet leaves a burn behind when it’s inadvertently touched, and the person who did the touching involuntarily jerks back the burned hand…and the brain remembers: touching hot pans brings on pain.  A lesson is learned.  But wounds are not always physical.  Some of the harshest pain is emotional.  When a person lashes out at another through words and deeds, the resulting scars are borne for a lifetime.  Every instance of emotional and verbal abuse leaves behind a heart that becomes less and less willing to fully trust, to engage, to live.  Sooner or later, even though … Continue reading Words

Cleaning Off the Political Smut

So what’s been going on lately?  I haven’t felt the inclination to write…or the gumption to post anything that I  actually pen.  I probably have about ten drafts saved on this blog site…but today it’s finally time to break the silence. Political Smut My parents had a colorful term to describe the endless junk mail that clogged the mailbox: smut.  That word was also used to describe the various detritus found in between nasty toes of kids who ran around barefoot all day…not that I would know anything about that, of course. It’s also the word that came to mind … Continue reading Cleaning Off the Political Smut

Once Upon This Time

Once upon a time, I was an archeologist.  The thrill of ancient discoveries eclipsed the drudgery, toil, and sweat until I hardly even noticed them. I also led an exciting life as a special agent, traveling the world incognito. (I would tell you some of the places I’ve been, except that’s classified.) I survived the Civil War, held on to Tara, and lost my true love … Continue reading Once Upon This Time

Crazy woman inside my head

There’s a crazy woman living inside my head.  Is there one in yours as well? She becomes irritated and annoyed at the tiniest transgressions. While outwardly I appear to be my same, sweet self, the inner me is causing all sorts of havoc — in my mind. Everything — and I mean everything — brings tears to my eyes.  Toads spotted on a walk, a squirrel almost run over under my tires, a dog who keeps getting sick, a commercial about a child going away to college, the scene in Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1 when Hermione “erased” herself … Continue reading Crazy woman inside my head

A Righteous Choice

Confession: two nights this past week I ate potato chips for dinner, and nothing else. I was going to write a lament about food allergies, but instead I find the Lord directing my thoughts in a different direction.  While I ate potato chips because I couldn’t find anything non-allergenic to eat, there are many people in this world who would ration an entire bag of potato chips because it was the ONLY food in the house. While I fret about whether or not food bought in restaurants contain wheat/soy/high fructose corn syrup/whey, there are hungry folks in my own neighborhood … Continue reading A Righteous Choice
