2 Corinthians 1-9 Again, this is a double duty blog report.  I’ve been down for the count the past couple of days with a raging sore throat and laryngitis.  The soreness is better but is now replaced by a niggling cough, congestion, and continued laryngitis.  I have never lost my voice this completely before.  My husband joked that in fifteen years of marriage, he has never experienced me being so quiet! In my reading tonight, I came across a beautiful description in 2 Corinthians 2 of what we are in Christ that contrasted starkly with the advertisements I read in … Continue reading Fragrance

Content to be a…

1 Corinthians 12-14 One of the BEST analogies I’ve ever read is contained in 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul compares the body of Christ (the people who make up the church) with a human body.  His writing is so clear and concise in this section.  I love this part: And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you … Continue reading Content to be a…

Be second

1 Corinthians 5-11 Tonight’s blog covers two days of readings and contains many instructions from Paul to the Corinthians…and to us.  Underlying all of his exhortations is the belief that we need to consider others before we consider ourselves…to put others first.  Our freedom in Christ (which I have yet to fully comprehend!) does not give us license to act in any old heathen way.  Rather, we are to use our freedom to better others. If something that we do causes someone else to stumble and sin, then we shouldn’t do it.  That’s why it is a good idea to … Continue reading Be second

Taking a stand

1 Corinthians 1-4 Paul has heard that the Christians in Corinth were already in discord, fighting over which apostle they followed…Paul, or Apollos, or Peter.  Paul chastised them and reminded them that they are to follow Christ.  The person who led them to Christ is not important. He also said something that struck a chord in me with the difficulties I’ve been facing lately: 20 For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power. And here: 24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles,[f] Christ is … Continue reading Taking a stand

The Divine Plan Book

Acts 18-19 Tonight I want to write about Apollos.  His story is one that I’ve skimmed over in past readings of the book of Acts, but now I see it with fresh eyes. Apollos was a Jew who came from Alexandria in Egypt.  He knew the scriptures well and was an excellent public speaker.  He believed in Jesus and taught others about him, but he was missing information about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. After Pricilla and Aquila taught him, he enthusiastically embraced their teaching…so much so that he refuted the Jews with powerful arguments in public debate. Using … Continue reading The Divine Plan Book
