Holding on

Isaiah 13-17 In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it— one from the house [a] of David— one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness. Over and over again, Isaiah prophesied about the coming of Jesus….about four hundred years into the future.  What might life have been like for those who did listen to Isaiah and follow the Lord?  They were expectant…yet they did not live to see the prophesy fulfilled. Today I am thinking about other prophesies that some of us don’t live to see fulfilled…or maybe we will. … Continue reading Holding on

Ahaz: A pain in the neck?

2 Chronicles 28; 2Kings 16-17 King Ahaz was an incredibly misguided leader.  In fact, the Bible describes him and those like him as being stubborn: Nevertheless they would not hear, but stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God. Stiff-necked Ahaz threw his own children in the fire.  He literally watched them burn to death despite being told over and over by the prophets that God’s people were not to fear other gods but only the One God. As ugly as that sounds, I have to confess that stiff-neckedness is … Continue reading Ahaz: A pain in the neck?

Puns in the Bible

Micah My favorite part of this book of the Bible was Micah’s use of puns.  If not for my study Bible, the meaning would have slipped over my head.  Since a headache that has lasted two days has rendered me unable to think deeply, I will point you to Micah 1:8-16.  The place names that he mentions have meanings that are the opposite of the words he chose.  For example, in verse 11, we see: The inhabitant of Zaanan does not go out. But the word Zaanan literally means, “Town of Going Out.” I’d say Micah had a sense of … Continue reading Puns in the Bible

Peace

2 Chronicles 27; Isaiah 9-12 I got chills as I read through these chapters of Isaiah today.  Isaiah looked into the future, and the Lord told him about Jesus…many things about him. With my homeschooling quest for knowledge and understanding, I especially perked up at these verses: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD – 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he … Continue reading Peace

Don’t mess with Amos

Amos 6-9 Don’t be complacent.  Don’t be proud.  Don’t trample on the poor.  And don’t threaten Amos!  Those are the messages I take from today’s reading.  The priest at Bethel, Amaziah, didn’t like to hear the things Amos was saying, so he told him to leave and go prophesy in Judah.  Basically, he told him to get out of Dodge. Did Amos listen?  Nope.  He kept on saying what the Lord put in his mouth, and furthermore had some choice words for Amaziah: Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor a prophet’s son, but I was a shepherd, … Continue reading Don’t mess with Amos
