Huckabee’s Hope for America

Yesterday I used a gift card to buy Mike Huckabee’s new book, From Hope to Higher Ground. I was disappointed by last night’s South Carolina primary results, but still I picked up his book to see what he really believes. I wanted to see for myself what kind of writer Huck is; I am not disappointed! In fact, Huckabee’s first two chapters inspired me to look up the word hope in the Bible and see what God has to say on the subject. Huck has a God-given insight to the hurts of people around him; he really sees that people … Continue reading Huckabee’s Hope for America

Taxes, Government and Christ

I watched the debate on Fox News last night and was reminded that, like all people who walk on this earth, all those candidates are just people. Like you and me, they all make mistakes. As my dad would say, they all put their pants on one leg at a time. It’s helpful to remember that when you watch the debates and other events that showcase them. I wish they’d spend more time talking about how they’d solve problems than pointing fingers at each other’s mistakes, but that’s for a different post. Today I need to write about taxes and … Continue reading Taxes, Government and Christ

Unshakable

Happy New Year!  The scriptures on my heart this week are all about being unshakable, which brings to mind a famous song from a long time ago… My hands are shaky and my knees are weak I can’t seem to stand on my own two feet… My tongue get tied when I try to speak My insides shake like a leaf on a tree Name that tune, anyone?  Elvis is all shook up about his love for his ‘buttercup.’  Shaky hands, weak knees, tongue-tied, shaking inside like a leaf on a tree.  Have you been there?  Those lyrics sound like … Continue reading Unshakable

Reflecting on the Miraculous

Yesterday afternoon the sun streamed shafts of light through the blinds, warming my cheek and highlighting the page I was reading in the Bible about the birth of Christ.  Suddenly I grew hungry to know more about this magical story.  I’ve heard it since I was old enough to speak, and I have known that it is actually not a story.  It is truth.  It really happened!  A long time ago my parents taught me the distinction between the fictional account of the North Pole, Santa Claus, Elves, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the non-fiction account in the Bible … Continue reading Reflecting on the Miraculous

The Truth-o-Meter

Some time ago I heard about CNN’s conservative guy Glenn Beck.  I watched him a couple of times and laughed.  I figured he was sort of like Bill O’Reilly’s counterpart.  I even bought his book, An Inconvenient Book, because I loved the name.  And while reading the book, I discovered that he is a Mormon. Way back in high school, I dated a guy who was a Mormon.  I’ll never forget the night he took me to a high school dance.  Rather than going out to dinner, his family turned their home into a fine dining establishment.  (We lived in … Continue reading The Truth-o-Meter
