Departure for a Moment

I’m taking a departure from my daily Bible Reading Challenge blog for a quick moment. The dreary scene outside my window matches the plodding of my heart.  I feel the cold creeping through the windowsills, winding its way around my toes as it shoots tendrils of chilly dampness up into my heart. Yes, it’s the Texas Yo-Yo weather.  If I knew how to capture a screen shot on my phone, I would have done so yesterday evening.  The weather channel update for my area showed the current temperature of 69 degrees.  Directly underneath, in bold letters against a red background, … Continue reading Departure for a Moment

Deuteronomy 5-7: The Mandate

These chapters contain the Ten Commandments as well as the heart of one of the main reasons we decided to homeschool our daughter: You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your … Continue reading Deuteronomy 5-7: The Mandate

Genesis 48-50: The power of a blessing

Even the book at the beginning comes to an end at some point!  Genesis ends first with Jacob’s death, followed by the death of Joseph. Before he died, Jacob wanted to bless his grandsons born to Joseph in Egypt.   The rights of the firstborn son and the blessings given by a father were profound back in those days.  Genesis has been filled with stories of deception related to the birth order and birth rights: Jacob himself stole his own brother Esau’s birthright and blessing…and then, in one of his last acts on earth, he did it again with his … Continue reading Genesis 48-50: The power of a blessing

Genesis 25-26:The thorns and the blossoms

I can’t imagine what it would be like to have my name printed among those that are written in the Bible.  If I had been living way back then, I know for sure I wouldn’t want to be named Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, or Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite. The Bible has a very short section about these two women.  Isaac’s son Esau was forty years old when he married both of the aforementioned women.  Until Jesus comes again, those two women will always be known as the two women who “…turned out to be thorns in … Continue reading Genesis 25-26:The thorns and the blossoms

Genesis 19-21:Eyes Wide Open

I don’t know why it is that I often seek rational explanations for supernatural events that are outlined in the Bible, but I do.  The description of God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah sounds a lot like a volcano eruption…with fire and brimstone. I have always wondered about Lot’s wife.  I thought surely something had been lost in translation somewhere.  Who ever heard of a human being turned into a pillar of salt?  Yet that is the account given in the Bible; Lot’s wife turned and looked back at the cities as they were being destroyed, so she turned into … Continue reading Genesis 19-21:Eyes Wide Open
