Memory Lane

Being in deep East Texas last week brought back vivid memories of times I spent hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Making my trip even more poignant was the fact that this was my first time to visit Grandma at the nursing home.  On our eighty mile trip there and back, the red dirt roads crisscrossing the highways reminded me of the peach orchard at their old place.  I can still see the trees in full bloom, laid out in nice rows with the ground hot and red underneath.  We’d play endless games of hide and seek out there … Continue reading Memory Lane

Give Us This Day Our Daily (gluten-free) Bread…

Today I almost heard the angels sing. Yesterday I started a two week experiment with a gluten-free diet.  The timing was not the greatest since I also traveled to deep East Texas in the middle of nowhere for a few days.  I figured I’d just endure a few days with no bread or cereals or sweets or anything else worth living for while I visited my parents.  This diet is particularly troublesome for me because I am a snacker.  I eat small amounts several times a day — yes, like a bird.  Who wants to snack on meat? :0) I … Continue reading Give Us This Day Our Daily (gluten-free) Bread…

From Audie Murphy to Algorithms

I’m beginning to suspect that my child is a mathematical prodigy — at least compared to me! Our second day of seventh grade started out much smoother than our first.  Whereas she likened me to the Wicked Witch of the West for starting school “too early” (public schools don’t get started for another couple of weeks in our state) yesterday, today it was easier to get started on school work.  I guess we had to climb over the mental hump.  Sometimes I think my daughter pretends to hate school because that’s what she thinks she’s supposed to do.  Yet I … Continue reading From Audie Murphy to Algorithms

Dealing With “Deadgetation”

I admit it.  I have a brown thumb.  But I promise I didn’t cause this travesty. I didn’t do it! The only times I’ve even crossed the threshold into the back yard have been to let the dog out.  (She didn’t do it, either.  She’s not tall enough!) I don’t have far to look, though, to see the culprit in this dastardly episode of deadgetation: It’s August in Texas.  We know it’s going to be hot.  We’re used to gingerly lowering ourselves on the steaming surface of the seats in the car. We know how to run errands in the … Continue reading Dealing With “Deadgetation”

Let the Good Times Commence

I’m not sure whether to write “Let the Good Times Roll” or “Let the Schooling Commence!”  Perhaps I could combine it into “Let the Good Schooling Times Commence to Roll!”  Well…maybe not. Either way, today I had a ball pulling out all the materials I’ve accumulated over the summer in preparation for my daughter’s first year of junior high. Challenge A with Classical Conversations is the road we are on with some history-based literature thrown in for vocabulary building and more imaginative exploration of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Tomorrow we will break out the planner and prepare for “our” … Continue reading Let the Good Times Commence
