Deuteronomy 8-10

The majesty of the Lord is so evident through these chapters.  Tonight I am weary and sick in my body, but my heart perks up to read these reminders of just how Great our God is: ….to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. …12 And now, O Israel, what … Continue reading Deuteronomy 8-10

Deuteronomy 5-7: The Mandate

These chapters contain the Ten Commandments as well as the heart of one of the main reasons we decided to homeschool our daughter: You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your … Continue reading Deuteronomy 5-7: The Mandate

Deuteronomy 3-4: The Victor

I’ve been wondering lately why the Lord’s plan for Israel involved them killing and destroying so many towns.  There must have been a reason or some kind of lesson — perhaps in obedience — because the Lord could have just sent a plague to wipe out the natives.  Yet, he did not.  He chose to show His glory and might to all the nations through his people by going into battle and fighting for them….not by eliminating the fight. I don’t like conflict.  Fighting upsets me more than fingernails down a chalkboard.  When my husband and I argue with each … Continue reading Deuteronomy 3-4: The Victor

Deuteronomy 1-2: ?

These first two chapter of Deuteronomy contain a summary of all that was written in Numbers — the record of the Israelites’ trek through the desert and their grumbling and disbelief about God’s ability to come through on his promise about the Promised Land.  It seemed like too big of a hurdle.  Forty years later, as the people stood on the edge of the Promised Land and looked in, Moses reminded the people of their journey. What must it have felt like to be one of those standing at the border?  The people about to cross over were going to … Continue reading Deuteronomy 1-2: ?

Numbers 35-36: The Refuge

These last chapters in the book of Numbers end on a merciful note.  The Lord commanded the Israelites to establish cities of refuge for those people who have accidentally caused another person’s death. I’d always heard of the Old Testament’s “eye for an eye” mandate, but I did not realize that the closest relative of a murdered person was the one responsible for executing the murderer.  If the death was an actual accident, however, the community members escort and protect the person who caused the death — but he had to stay within the city of refuge to have guaranteed … Continue reading Numbers 35-36: The Refuge
