Numbers 33-34: Moving to a new zip code

The Israelites are almost to the Promised Land! Numbers 33 was what we call in the Institute for Excellence in Writing the “clencher.”  It summarizes all that has gone on before.  The next chapter sets out the general boundaries of the Promised Land, from north to south, and from east to west. God instructs them to completely drive out the people who are living in that land…if they fail to do that, then the natives will be like splinters in their eyes and thorns in their sides. I have always been bothered by that whole “driving out” and “completely destroy” … Continue reading Numbers 33-34: Moving to a new zip code

Numbers 31-32: Refusing the Promise?

Aside from the brutal battle between the Israelites and the Midianites, I am most struck tonight by the decision of two of the tribes, Gad and Reuban, to claim land east of the Jordan instead of over inside the actual Promised Land. They promised to fight with all the rest of Israel, but they wanted to build towns and have their families live just on the other side of the land flowing with milk and honey.  They looked around them, and what they saw was “good enough.” How many times do we do that with the Promised Land God has … Continue reading Numbers 31-32: Refusing the Promise?

Numbers 28-30: No Swearing Allowed

I confess my eyeballs are sore!  Numbers is not an easy book to plod through, but the Lord is showing me insights that I never dreamed I’d find in between all the begats. Vows and pledges are important and are not to be taken lightly or with a flippant heart.  They are so valuable that a father of an unmarried woman can nullify her vow…a fiancee can nullify his betrothed’s vows…and a husband can nullify his wife’s vows…but if he does not and she ends up breaking it, he is punished. Jesus echoed the importance of not making vows or … Continue reading Numbers 28-30: No Swearing Allowed

Numbers 26-27: Providing for the Future

These two chapters set out instructions on what to do about inheritance issues when a man has no children or if he has only daughters. The Lord told Moses that he would not get to walk in the Promised Land because of his sin in using the staff to bring forth the waters in the desert (rather than just obey the Lord exactly), and Moses asked him to appoint a leader for the people in his place…the Lord chose Joshua, who he said “had the Spirit.” What direct instructions do we have from the Lord Jesus?  Love the Lord with … Continue reading Numbers 26-27: Providing for the Future

Numbers 23-25

A talking donkey.  A prophet who was called by a king to curse Israel but could only bless them — not once, but three times.  More sinning — sexual immorality and idol worship.  Another plague, and a daring rescue by a quick-thinking man who killed the blatant sinner who set out to frolic with a foreign woman in the sight of everyone so that the Lord would stop the plague from spreading even more. I have no idea how to apply this reading to my life except to, once again, see the great power and majesty of the Lord.  Baalam’s … Continue reading Numbers 23-25
