Rain in my heart

My. Heart. Hurts. Tomorrow the weather will be a balmy 70-ish degree day, so I’ve planned for my daughter and I to do our homeschool outside. That way, we can take advantage of the sunshine while spending time with Shiner. I am feeling so desperate that I just sent an email to our old vet, the one we used back in Florida, to see if perhaps there is something, anything, that we’ve overlooked. Maybe I should have walked him more to keep the arthritis at bay. Maybe I should not have switched his food. Maybe I should have tried accupuncture. … Continue reading Rain in my heart

A Sadly Funny Kind of Evening

Most of my posts this week will be about our dog Shiner.  He’s front and center in my mind and in my chores lately.  Writing is a release, and so is laughter.  Despite the sadness and pain, there was a little humor last night. We felt guilty for keeping Shiner outside all day.  Some of the time he stood at the door, legs shaking, eyes imploring to be let in.  So my husband decided to try the diaper again.  We used a small sized pull-up because the doggy diapers were too big for his emaciated hips.  He cut a hole  … Continue reading A Sadly Funny Kind of Evening

The End of the Road

It is the end of the road for our canine companion. We have tried every medically possible avenue to prolong his sweet doggy life, but next Saturday, barring a miracle, we will say goodbye. It is hard not to feel like an executioner standing by the guillotine, readying the blade. It feels callous to “set a date,” as if we mere mortals have any right to determine when a creature — much less one as loved as our Shiner — lives or dies. Yet the Lord placed the animals under our dominion. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful … Continue reading The End of the Road

Dogs days are up and now back down

The new medicine has made my old dog somewhat more comfortable, but it is not a “cure-all.”  He didn’t even try to get on the couch last night.  And I’ve cleaned up two messes already today, so obviously it hasn’t helped with that end of him. The vet said that if it’s going to help him regain control, it will within two weeks of beginning treatment. Can I last that long?  I seriously wanted to drop kick him into next week when I was in the middle of cleaning up our breakfast messes and saw that my little canine shadow … Continue reading Dogs days are up and now back down

Quick Doggy Update

Our old dog has been on prednisone since Monday.  Since then, he’s had just one accident, and that was Monday. This morning when I took him out into the frigid air, he began running.  I haven’t seen him run that fast in a long, long, time.  The happy grin on his face just said it all.   I can tell for sure that at least the steroids are making him feel much, much better.
