More thoughts on idols

Jeremiah 49-50 Jeremiah predicts more destruction, including the coming destruction of Babylon.  Why?  Because of their idol worship and of the way they treated the Israelite captives. This post is short due to neck pain.  I learned today that not all massage is created equal. I posed the question yesterday about modern day, virtual idols.  What might constitute a virtual idol? Money, power, sports heros, actors, football teams, chocolate, coffee, jewelry, cars, careers?  Someone once told me that an idol is anything a person turns to for comfort apart from the Lord.  In my case, that would be the books … Continue reading More thoughts on idols

Removing virtual idols

Jeremiah 46-48 Jeremiah gives prophesies about the coming destruction of the land of Egypt, the Philistines, and Moab.  Their crime?  Worshiping idols and false gods. It makes me wonder what kind of false gods we have in our society.  In who or what do we put our trust? Our western culture does not fashion idols out of wood or stone.  We are fast becoming worse than an idol worshiping country: we are becoming a country where the people worship NO god other than themselves.  Humanity is the pinnacle of all there ever will be and of all there ever has … Continue reading Removing virtual idols

Out of the box obedience

Jeremiah 41-45 The theme for today seems to be obedience.  The remnant left behind in Judea was frightened and determined in their hearts to run away to Egypt.  But before they went, they tried to outwardly act as if they were following the Lord rather than their own hearts.  They went to Jeremiah and promised to do whatever the Lord told them to do: ““May the Lord your God be a faithful witness against us if we refuse to obey whatever he tells us to do! 6 Whether we like it or not, we will obey the Lord our God to whom we … Continue reading Out of the box obedience

This, too, shall pass

Habakkuk The Lord sent warnings about the coming onslaught of Babylonians not just to Jeremiah, but also to other prophets like Habakkuk.  The most beautiful prayer/song that I can remember reading in a long time is found in Habakkuk 3.  Here’s my favorite part: “17 Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful … Continue reading This, too, shall pass

Restoration

2 Kings 24-25; 2 Chronicles 36 After the King of Babylon did his smack down on Jerusalem, the people were exiled for seventy years…exactly the time pronounced earlier by Jeremiah.  But the land was not desolate for seventy years.  God used that time to heal it, and perhaps to heal the hearts of his people. “21 The land enjoyed its sabbath rests; all the time of its desolation it rested, until the seventy years were completed in fulfillment of the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah.” (2 Chronicles 36) Once again, the Lord brought rest and restoration out of … Continue reading Restoration
