Steering my eyes

1 Chronicles 23-25 Today’s reading was a list of names.  I know it was more than just names, but I’m having a difficult time grasping it all.  David was old and “full of years” (I love the way that phrase sounds!) when he appointed his son Solomon to be the next king.  He then commissioned Solomon to build the temple and divided the Levites up to give the people special jobs to do.  It’s obvious that David was a gifted musician and that music for the Lord was in his heart because he directly oversaw the 280 musicians who would … Continue reading Steering my eyes

About praise…

Psalm 108-111 David pours out his anguish in these psalms, asking the Lord to smite his enemies, especially in Psalm 109.  Psalm 111, however, is a psalm of praise: He has shown his people the power of his works, He has indeed, even today.  My aunt was diagnosed with an extreme form of leukemia on May 5th.  She has received two rounds of chemotherapy…and her doctors are baffled at how well she is doing!  Many people with her kind of leukemia don’t even make it through the chemo…but she did.  She still has her hair.  She is not bleeding through … Continue reading About praise…

2 Samuel 24; 1 Chronicles 21-22; Psalm 30 Both the chapter in Samuel and the chapter in 1 Chronicles begin with the story of David deciding to take a military census to see how many fighting men were in his land.  This was a grievous sin…even his military commanders questioned the wisdom of doing such a thing…but why? Why was it wrong to take a census?  It must have had something to do with the concerns of David’s heart.  Was he puffed up and proud?  Counting his fighting men like the giant counted his gold in Jack and the Beanstalk? … Continue reading Sentence subjects

Psalm 95; 97-99 Today’s psalms are joyful and are about giving praise to the Lord…about his holiness and his great mercy and love. I am confused with Psalm 95.  In the beginning of the psalm, the words are written in the third person.  David tells us to worship the LORD.  But here, the person changes: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your … Continue reading Faith Field

Awaken the dawn

2 Samuel 22-23; Psalm 57 David’s last words are recorded in these chapters.  It is not surprising that they would be words to a song…he was an artist at heart, for sure! I can just imagine the emotion behind David’s praises.  I can hear in my mind the pitch of his voice as he praised the Lord for delivering him out of the snare…for sheltering him…for causing his enemies to fall into their own traps. One line from Psalm 57 jumped out at me.  The note in my Bible says that this was written when David fled from Saul and … Continue reading Awaken the dawn
