Joshua 1-4: Another display of God’s glory

Children in Sunday schools across the land hear early and often about the Exodus.  They hear about the miraculous parting of the Red Sea.  They aren’t alone. The people east of the Jordan River had also heard rumors of the powerful God leading the nation of Israel, and they were terrified.  What would such a God do to them? Then, the Lord caused the waters of the Jordan River — in flood stage in spring — to pile up at one end, leaving a riverbed for the people to cross.  This picture of the Jordan River in the springtime shows … Continue reading Joshua 1-4: Another display of God’s glory

Deuteronomy 32-34; Psalm 91: Dealing with Anxiety

The end of Deuteronomy…the blessings pronounced by Moses on the people of Israel…and one of my favorite psalms. I’ve been in a funk this past week.  There is no other way to describe it except that I’m like the little boy on Peanuts who always had a cloud hanging over his head.  The health care vote did not help my state of mind.  Neither did a passage I came across in a Christian book about anxiety that said that panic attacks are sinful.  Obviously, the person who wrote the book has never experienced one or he would know that they … Continue reading Deuteronomy 32-34; Psalm 91: Dealing with Anxiety

Departure for a Moment

I’m taking a departure from my daily Bible Reading Challenge blog for a quick moment. The dreary scene outside my window matches the plodding of my heart.  I feel the cold creeping through the windowsills, winding its way around my toes as it shoots tendrils of chilly dampness up into my heart. Yes, it’s the Texas Yo-Yo weather.  If I knew how to capture a screen shot on my phone, I would have done so yesterday evening.  The weather channel update for my area showed the current temperature of 69 degrees.  Directly underneath, in bold letters against a red background, … Continue reading Departure for a Moment

Numbers 31-32: Refusing the Promise?

Aside from the brutal battle between the Israelites and the Midianites, I am most struck tonight by the decision of two of the tribes, Gad and Reuban, to claim land east of the Jordan instead of over inside the actual Promised Land. They promised to fight with all the rest of Israel, but they wanted to build towns and have their families live just on the other side of the land flowing with milk and honey.  They looked around them, and what they saw was “good enough.” How many times do we do that with the Promised Land God has … Continue reading Numbers 31-32: Refusing the Promise?

Exodus 25-27:Sacred Offerings

I confess that these chapters of Exodus make my head swim.  There is a reason the Lord did not lead me to a profession as an architect!  It is hard work for a person as spatially challenged as I am to read these verses and make any sense of them.  However, I realized as I plowed through these chapters describing the plans for building the Ark, Table, Lampstand, Tabernacle, and Courtyard that each of these items for worship were to be built precisely with the BEST the people had to offer: the best cloth, the finest colors, the strongest wood, … Continue reading Exodus 25-27:Sacred Offerings
