Sentence subjects

2 Samuel 24; 1 Chronicles 21-22; Psalm 30 Both the chapter in Samuel and the chapter in 1 Chronicles begin with the story of David deciding to take a military census to see how many fighting men were in his land.  This was a grievous sin…even his military commanders questioned the wisdom of doing such a thing…but why? Why was it wrong to take a census?  It must have had something to do with the concerns of David’s heart.  Was he puffed up and proud?  Counting his fighting men like the giant counted his gold in Jack and the Beanstalk? … Continue reading Sentence subjects

Psalm 95; 97-99 Today’s psalms are joyful and are about giving praise to the Lord…about his holiness and his great mercy and love. I am confused with Psalm 95.  In the beginning of the psalm, the words are written in the third person.  David tells us to worship the LORD.  But here, the person changes: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your … Continue reading Faith Field

Awaken the dawn

2 Samuel 22-23; Psalm 57 David’s last words are recorded in these chapters.  It is not surprising that they would be words to a song…he was an artist at heart, for sure! I can just imagine the emotion behind David’s praises.  I can hear in my mind the pitch of his voice as he praised the Lord for delivering him out of the snare…for sheltering him…for causing his enemies to fall into their own traps. One line from Psalm 57 jumped out at me.  The note in my Bible says that this was written when David fled from Saul and … Continue reading Awaken the dawn

Melting in my bones

Psalm 5; 38; 41-42 I injured my shoulder today carrying our huge bag of piano books.  I must be in the worst shape of anyone I know.  Whoever heard of pulling a muscle while carrying a shoulder bag? Due to said shoulder injury, this blog will be short and sweet. Is sickness related to sin?  That’s the question that I pondered as I read today’s reading in the  Psalms.  David certainly connected the two, but I am thinking that he might have been writing metaphorically.  The structure of the poems were very deliberate; some were acrostic poems (the first word … Continue reading Melting in my bones

Writer’s block

2 Samuel 19-21 David finally is restored to his throne after hightailing it out of Jerusalem in the wake of Absalom’s conspiracy. His military commander, Joab, was not an honest man.  He killed twice in order to retain command of the army. I guess that goes to show that the Lord is Lord over us all — the good, the bad, and the ugly! Beyond that…I have writer’s block.  I can’t think of any application to today’s passage except to not lose hope, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.  David’s men were fickle, moving their loyalty quickly depending … Continue reading Writer’s block
