The Speed of Life

Psalm 25, 29, 33, 36, 39 Rushing through life is my mode of operation.  From the moment I wake until my head hits the pillow, I am in a hurry.  I resemble that country song where the singer laments, “I’m in a hurry to get things done…oh I….rush and rush until life’s no fun.  All I really gotta do is live and die, but I’m in a hurry and don’t know why…” Part of my hurried, harried lifestyle is due to poor planning on my part.  It always takes longer to get out the door than I expect it to … Continue reading The Speed of Life

A Gracious Detour

2Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17 Both of these passages are nearly identical, and they illustrate a time when a man, King David, had a thought of something great he could do for God…but God told him that he had other plans.  Rather than get offended, David was honored.  He shows us how we can navigate those times when we suddenly realize that the path we *thought* was right is actually not the one the Lord has chosen for us. David was decked out in his new palace made of cedar when it occurred to him that the Lord’s dwelling place … Continue reading A Gracious Detour

Psalm Songs

Psalm 89, 96, 100-101, 105, 132 As I continue to work my way through the Psalms, I keep reading verses that remind me of songs that I grew up singing in church — and some songs that I sing today.  A psalm is actually a song.  I wish there was a way I could hear the psalms put to the same music that was used back when they were first written.  It would be even better if I could understand the original language so I could experience the poetry and rhythm as originally written. Blessed are those who have learned … Continue reading Psalm Songs

Lotta Psalms

Psalm 1-2, 15, 22-24, 47, 68 Today’s reading had me heart-first into the Psalms.  I paid particular attention to some verses in Psalm 22.  David hit rock bottom and just cried his heart out to the Lord.  He provides me with a good model for how to cry out to God for myself.  I self-regulate my prayers oftentimes out of respect for the Lord’s sovereignity.  But then are they real? Two separate doctors have recommended a day surgery for me for a problem I’ve been suffering.  Like an idiot, I looked it up online and discovered some disconcerting details.   … Continue reading Lotta Psalms

2Samuel 5:11-6:23; 1Chron 13-16 – Praise for ancient and modern miracles

Tonight I am writing about miracles. On Sunday, our pastor spoke about new beginnings and pointed out that the miracles recorded in the Bible happened AFTER an act of obedience.  I had never considered that, but as I look over in my mind’s eye the miracles that I remember, it is true: Jesus fed the 5000 after his disciples obeyed him in bringing out the food. Jesus told the paralyzed man to take up his mat and walk.  And the paralyzed man obeyed. Jesus healed the person with the crippled hand.  He told him the stretch out his hand.  And … Continue reading 2Samuel 5:11-6:23; 1Chron 13-16 – Praise for ancient and modern miracles
