Lessons from the beauty shop

Today has been one of those homeschooling-on-the-go kind of days.  Due to my quarterly effort to stave off the effects of aging hair follicles with toxic dye, we spent the morning holed up at the beauty shop.  Fortunately, the black leather couch is almost as comfy as our own, so my daughter felt right at home doing her schoolwork.  The next time she has trouble focusing, I will ask her to bring up reserves of whatever it was that allowed her to focus today even with hair dryers buzzing and chatter all around the shop! I’ve decided that I rather … Continue reading Lessons from the beauty shop

An amazing day

I had so many birthday well wishes on my Facebook wall today.  People wrote many adjectives describing the kind of day they hoped I would have: amazing, wondrous, special, incredible, happy.  And it occurred to me: just what constitutes an amazing day? Amazing is different depending on who is doing the rating, isn’t it?  To a person who has no arms or legs, amazing might be finding a new tool to help improve mobility.  To a fisherman, amazing might include a 3am start out on the lake.  But what does it mean to me? Sadly, I don’t think I know … Continue reading An amazing day

The Boss of Math

Last year, I read and blogged my way through the Bible.  This year, I am again reading through the Bible chronologically, but I have a new blogging challenge. I am a homeschooling mom of an only child.  I want to write about our experiences together in hopes of getting and giving ideas and support from other homeschooling bloggers out in the arena.  I hope that writing about our schooling will give me a forum to evaluate our progress and will keep me accountable. I have to guard myself from a tendency to follow after the next new wave. Then we … Continue reading The Boss of Math

It is Finished!

Revelation 19-22 With the Lord’s help…I have now successfully read the Bible from cover to cover!! Along the way I have been challenged in my faith and in my beliefs about what the Bible really says.  So much of what I thought I knew, I did not understand completely. I have a deeper, richer view of God’s great love, mercy and justice. One thing I thought I knew about the end times and death has been thrown out of the water as I finished reading Revelation. I did not know there would be a first resurrection — of those who … Continue reading It is Finished!

A reason for reading Revelation

Revelation 12-18 Persecution is going to come. It will be far more severe than our government telling us we can’t mention Jesus’ name or have prayer in public areas.  We will be told to worship a statue, or die. If we refuse to have the name of the beast on our heads or hands, we won’t be able to  buy or sell anything. If we aren’t outright murdered for our faith, then we may be starved to death. This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying his commands and maintaining their faith in Jesus. Because of Revelation, … Continue reading A reason for reading Revelation
