John 7-8 Jesus begins to be bolder in his explanation of Who He is.  The people don’t want to believe he’s the Messiah because the scriptures say the Messiah will come from Bethlehem, not Galilee. Why then didn’t Jesus tell them the story of his early life?  Why is it that the people of Galilee did not know of his birth in Bethlehem, flight to Egypt, and then trip back to Nazareth?  I’ve often wondered about that.  Perhaps Jesus wanted to cultivate faith?  Or maybe his parents didn’t tell him?  But He knew everything! Perhaps the answer lies here: 7He … Continue reading More questions, no answers

A Closet Libertarian

It’s been a very long time since I have posted political musings.  Today is a stormy day, I’m missing a family reunion due to back pain, and an email I received several days ago from my mom reminded me that voting is a privilege AND a responsibility.  All those things add up to RESEARCH time. So while I wait for the soup on the stove to finish simmering, I’ve got my feet up and my laptop in my lap, fingers and brain clicking at the speed of light…well, almost. First I need to send out a thank you to the … Continue reading A Closet Libertarian

Matthew 18 Be humble like a child…and forgive from the heart.  Those are the messages I gleaned tonight from Matthew 18.  But trying to pick one or even two topics to glean from Jesus is nearly impossible.  Every word that is recorded as coming from his mouth is instructive.  Sometimes I wish I could physically EAT his words and make them a part of myself. Tonight I heard Josh Hamilton give all glory to Jesus for the Rangers’ win.  When asked if he had reached the top of his mountain (getting into the World Series), Josh replied, on national television, … Continue reading Kudos all around

Seeking His Glory

Matthew 17; Mark 9; Luke 9:28-62 Today’s reading centered around the Transfiguration.  One interesting aspect to this that I never noticed before is that when Jesus set out to go to his death in Jerusalem, he sent messengers ahead of him to prepare a place for him in Samaria….but the people there didn’t welcome him because he was going on to Jerusalem.  I think I must be missing a piece of the culture here and need to do some reading.  But not tonight! Wouldn’t you like to have been with the disciples on the hillside when Jesus was transfigured?  Or … Continue reading Seeking His Glory

Not my lap dog

Matthew 16, Mark 8, Luke 9:18-27 It’s so easy to poke fun at the Pharisees and religious leaders.  To an outsider looking in, reading about events after the fact, we can pinpoint their failures and hopefully learn how NOT to act! Right after Jesus miraculously fed four thousand people using only seven loaves of bread and a few fish, with seven basketfuls of leftovers, the Pharisees went to Jesus and asked him for….wait for it….a SIGN from heaven.  As if feeding a huge crowd of people with a meager amount of food didn’t qualify as a sign?  As if healing … Continue reading Not my lap dog
