Melting in my bones

Psalm 5; 38; 41-42 I injured my shoulder today carrying our huge bag of piano books.  I must be in the worst shape of anyone I know.  Whoever heard of pulling a muscle while carrying a shoulder bag? Due to said shoulder injury, this blog will be short and sweet. Is sickness related to sin?  That’s the question that I pondered as I read today’s reading in the  Psalms.  David certainly connected the two, but I am thinking that he might have been writing metaphorically.  The structure of the poems were very deliberate; some were acrostic poems (the first word … Continue reading Melting in my bones

Writer’s block

2 Samuel 19-21 David finally is restored to his throne after hightailing it out of Jerusalem in the wake of Absalom’s conspiracy. His military commander, Joab, was not an honest man.  He killed twice in order to retain command of the army. I guess that goes to show that the Lord is Lord over us all — the good, the bad, and the ugly! Beyond that…I have writer’s block.  I can’t think of any application to today’s passage except to not lose hope, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.  David’s men were fickle, moving their loyalty quickly depending … Continue reading Writer’s block

Words: the building blocks of life

Psalm 26; 40; 58; 61-62; 64 These Psalms show the extremes that David faced…from saying that he was blameless in Psalm 26 to confessing that he was drowning in sin in Psalm 40. But reading Psalm 64 got me thinking about the importance of the words we choose to use.  In it, words are compared to sharpened arrows.  Isn’t that so true? 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their words like deadly arrows. 4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent man; they shoot at him suddenly, without fear. 5 They encourage each other in evil plans, … Continue reading Words: the building blocks of life

Rebellion thwarted

2 Samuel 16-18 Absalom’s rebellion against his father’s reign was cut short — and King David mourned for the loss of the son who had tried to kill him. The love of a parent for a child is one of the greatest mysteries I’ve ever experienced, and it gives a clue into what the Lord feels for His children.  The depiction in today’s reading is vivid: David’s men defeated Absalom.  The battlefield was chaotic — more men died in the forest than by the sword.  Absolom got his head caught on a tree branch while his donkey kept walking…and David’s … Continue reading Rebellion thwarted

Turning gloominess into praise

Psalm 3-4; 12-13; 28; 55 Psalm 13 is my song tonight.  I’ve been a bit like Pig Pen on Charlie Brown this weekend, only the cloud hovering over my head is gloomy and rainy, not dusty (although, that may not be far off the mark, either!) I’m feeling trapped and overwhelmed with the magnitude of what the Lord has called me to do, yet I know that it is not me who will ever get it done, but Him, working through me.  What on earth is a germaphobic nut doing leading a homeschool group that has mushroomed in size from … Continue reading Turning gloominess into praise
