God’s contingency plans

This past week, I’ve been preoccupied with mortality and fragility. One of my close friends, Holly, has a friend my age who recently suffered a severe stroke.  Joanne is the writer of The Simple Wife blog and the author of several books.  Like me, she homeschooled her children.  I feel a certain affinity with her because I, too, am the mother of a twelve year old girl.  The fact that her daughter is the one who found her after her stroke still gets to me, down deep in a swirling nebula that is my heart. Now her homeschooled daughters are … Continue reading God’s contingency plans

Elusive contentment

It’s a bit difficult to write on my laptop when there is a small dog sitting in my lap.  I hesitate to move her, though, because she is keeping me warm!  This cold weather is not my friend. We did our homeschooling reading today while snuggling under a blanket on the couch.  Outside the pool waterfall is on, triggered by the freezing temperatures to keep running so those pipes don’t freeze.  It looks incongruous and out of place with the snow-covered palm tree standing silently beside it. On the math front, we’re still working our way through the tests to … Continue reading Elusive contentment

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace.  Those words have new meaning to me today. For nearly two years, I’ve been suffering from periods so painful that I was on the brink of getting a hysterectomy just to find relief.  I’ve dreaded that time of the month with palatable fear because I knew what kind of pain I was about to experience…the kind that no medication helps.  The kind that causes my lower back to hurt worse than it did during labor when I had my daughter.  The kind that doubles me up, causes me to lose my appetite, and brings on nausea. The severe … Continue reading Amazing Grace

Taking a stand

1 Corinthians 1-4 Paul has heard that the Christians in Corinth were already in discord, fighting over which apostle they followed…Paul, or Apollos, or Peter.  Paul chastised them and reminded them that they are to follow Christ.  The person who led them to Christ is not important. He also said something that struck a chord in me with the difficulties I’ve been facing lately: 20 For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power. And here: 24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles,[f] Christ is … Continue reading Taking a stand

Looking for His power

1 and 2 Thessolonians 11 So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. As I read both letters to the Thessolonians, I had a desire to travel back in time to BE among them.  I wish I had heard the Good News of Jesus accompanied by the power of the Holy Spirit…probably because at this moment I am back in the desert.  I know the Lord is here and … Continue reading Looking for His power
