A state of delight

1 Kings 1-2; Psalm 37; 71; 94 I have graduation on my mind.  Two of my nephews graduate from high school this year; one graduated yesterday, and the other will graduate next week.  It seems like just yesterday they were little boys playing with matchbox cars: now they are big boys playing with real cars! So as I read these words tonight, I thought of the journey ahead of each of them: one wants to be a sports journalist, and the other wants to be a doctor — Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires … Continue reading A state of delight

Beautiful psalms on a sleepy night

Psalm 131; 138-139; 143-145 These Psalms are so beautiful to me tonight.  I want to highlight a couple verses from each: Psalm 131 I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.2 But I have stilled and quieted my soul; The headlines are so full of bad news.  Sin is growing more and more powerful in this global world.  It’s difficult to look at all those who need saving without feeling a twinge of uselessness.  How on earth can one person like me make a difference?  In an effort to curb anxiety in my life, … Continue reading Beautiful psalms on a sleepy night

Steering my eyes

1 Chronicles 23-25 Today’s reading was a list of names.  I know it was more than just names, but I’m having a difficult time grasping it all.  David was old and “full of years” (I love the way that phrase sounds!) when he appointed his son Solomon to be the next king.  He then commissioned Solomon to build the temple and divided the Levites up to give the people special jobs to do.  It’s obvious that David was a gifted musician and that music for the Lord was in his heart because he directly oversaw the 280 musicians who would … Continue reading Steering my eyes

Faith Field

Psalm 95; 97-99 Today’s psalms are joyful and are about giving praise to the Lord…about his holiness and his great mercy and love. I am confused with Psalm 95.  In the beginning of the psalm, the words are written in the third person.  David tells us to worship the LORD.  But here, the person changes: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your … Continue reading Faith Field

Turning gloominess into praise

Psalm 3-4; 12-13; 28; 55 Psalm 13 is my song tonight.  I’ve been a bit like Pig Pen on Charlie Brown this weekend, only the cloud hovering over my head is gloomy and rainy, not dusty (although, that may not be far off the mark, either!) I’m feeling trapped and overwhelmed with the magnitude of what the Lord has called me to do, yet I know that it is not me who will ever get it done, but Him, working through me.  What on earth is a germaphobic nut doing leading a homeschool group that has mushroomed in size from … Continue reading Turning gloominess into praise
