Finding delight

Psalm 111-118 Today’s psalms are mostly about praise.  What joy it is to read psalms that have been turned into songs that I sing in church and hear on the radio! However, tonight I want to examine one verse in Psalm 112: Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. Do you delight in commands?  Honestly, there are many times that I chafe at commands.  I have a strong tendency to want to be my own boss…so much so that I fear there are moments when the Lord would have me do one … Continue reading Finding delight

Be strong and do the work

1 Chronicles 25-29; Psalm 127 I never realized until reading tonight that Solomon became king before his father David died.  I don’t know if that is important in any way…it shows wisdom on David’s part to go ahead and secure the leadership.  All of his last words were instructions to the people regarding the building of the temple.  He gave all his treasure for it; his heart was fully involved.  I wonder if a part of him was sad that he wouldn’t be the one to build it? Yet he was the one to plan it, and he passed on … Continue reading Be strong and do the work

Beautiful psalms on a sleepy night

Psalm 131; 138-139; 143-145 These Psalms are so beautiful to me tonight.  I want to highlight a couple verses from each: Psalm 131 I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.2 But I have stilled and quieted my soul; The headlines are so full of bad news.  Sin is growing more and more powerful in this global world.  It’s difficult to look at all those who need saving without feeling a twinge of uselessness.  How on earth can one person like me make a difference?  In an effort to curb anxiety in my life, … Continue reading Beautiful psalms on a sleepy night

Steering my eyes

1 Chronicles 23-25 Today’s reading was a list of names.  I know it was more than just names, but I’m having a difficult time grasping it all.  David was old and “full of years” (I love the way that phrase sounds!) when he appointed his son Solomon to be the next king.  He then commissioned Solomon to build the temple and divided the Levites up to give the people special jobs to do.  It’s obvious that David was a gifted musician and that music for the Lord was in his heart because he directly oversaw the 280 musicians who would … Continue reading Steering my eyes

About praise…

Psalm 108-111 David pours out his anguish in these psalms, asking the Lord to smite his enemies, especially in Psalm 109.  Psalm 111, however, is a psalm of praise: He has shown his people the power of his works, He has indeed, even today.  My aunt was diagnosed with an extreme form of leukemia on May 5th.  She has received two rounds of chemotherapy…and her doctors are baffled at how well she is doing!  Many people with her kind of leukemia don’t even make it through the chemo…but she did.  She still has her hair.  She is not bleeding through … Continue reading About praise…
