Genesis 19-21:Eyes Wide Open

I don’t know why it is that I often seek rational explanations for supernatural events that are outlined in the Bible, but I do.  The description of God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah sounds a lot like a volcano eruption…with fire and brimstone. I have always wondered about Lot’s wife.  I thought surely something had been lost in translation somewhere.  Who ever heard of a human being turned into a pillar of salt?  Yet that is the account given in the Bible; Lot’s wife turned and looked back at the cities as they were being destroyed, so she turned into … Continue reading Genesis 19-21:Eyes Wide Open

Genesis 16-18:Out of my hands and into God’s

Today in church I was really convicted about this blog I am writing.  Our current sermon series is about learning how to incorporate spiritual disciplines in our lives.  Today’s topic was about getting into the Word of God…not for information, but for transformation. Do I read these scriptures just so I can check them off a list?  Do I approach them the way I do the newspaper, skipping over or skimming items that don’t interest me, or do I approach them as I would a letter from a friend?  Do I tweak what I read to make it fit the … Continue reading Genesis 16-18:Out of my hands and into God’s

Genesis 12-15: The Proof

So much happened in these chapters that it is difficult to pick which ones to write about! First, I notice that Abram, although chosen by God, is not perfect.  When a famine hit and the family migrated to Egypt, Abram told Sarai to pose as his sister, not as his wife.  She was so beautiful that Abram was afraid Pharaoh’s men would kill HIM so that Pharaoh could have her as a wife. I simply cannot put myself in Abram’s shoes.  I just can’t imagine a husband willingly encouraging his wife to shack up with another man, no matter what … Continue reading Genesis 12-15: The Proof

Job 40-42:God Drives the Bus

Welcome to day 15 of my personal Bible Reading and Blogging Challenge.  I’ve worked my way partway through Genesis before jumping over to Job, following a Chronological reading plan, and tonight I finished reading the book of Job. It certainly ended on a high note!  After hearing from God himself, Job finally did step up and confess, God forgave his friends, and then the Lord gave Job everything back that he had lost…and then some.  He had more children and grandchildren and lived another 140 years to a ripe old age. Job said, “I admit I once lived by rumors … Continue reading Job 40-42:God Drives the Bus

Job 38-39:God’s Power Unleashed

One of the most incredible miracles known the mankind are the kind that happen to those who belong to Christ when they are pressed beyond comprehension.  In the midst of all the horrible images of broken bodies and crumbled buildings in Haiti is a haunting one of people walking hand in hand in the streets, singing hymns to the Lord.  HYMNS!  In the middle of the dust and panic, there were people singing praises to the Lord on High. I have a friend who is stranded in Haiti.  She went on what was supposed to be a 4-day mission trip, … Continue reading Job 38-39:God’s Power Unleashed
