Politically Incorrect

Acts 1-6 Peter had no sense of the phrase “political correctness.”  He was bold and in-your-face.  He did not candy coat any hard truth.  For this honesty, he was flogged, thrown in prison, and forbidden to speak in the Name of Jesus.  Yet he chose to obey the Lord rather than those in authority who told him to stop talking about Jesus. There will likely be a time two thousand years later when we are called upon to do the same as Peter…to throw political correctness out the window, to rely on the Holy Spirit to give us words to … Continue reading Politically Incorrect

Feeding the sheep

Luke 24; John 20-21 Competition is on my mind tonight.  A close reading of John 20 and 21 uncovers a competitive streak running between John and Peter, at least in John’s eyes. …John is careful to say not once, but twice, that when he and Peter raced to the tomb to see if the women were correct about it being empty, he (John), got there first.  Apparently winning the footrace was important to him! …John records Peter’s conversation with Jesus after he appeared to them while they were fishing.  In his account, Peter looked back at John and asked Jesus … Continue reading Feeding the sheep

Looking for the message

Matthew 28; Mark 16 Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, and a woman named Salome bought spices to anoint Jesus’ body.  I wonder about Salome.  Who was she?  I also wonder about the conflicting emotions that must have seized their hearts when they learned Jesus had risen…when they tried to tell the news to everyone, but no one believed them…why?  Because they were women?  Possibly.  These people saw Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead after four days…did they not believe that Jesus would also rise? My pain level is better tonight than last night.  It was a rough one. … Continue reading Looking for the message

The torn curtain

Matthew 27, Mark 15 Both of these crucifixion accounts tell of the curtain in the temple being torn in two, earthquakes and other frightening events happening at the moment of Jesus’ death.  But Matthew says that people who had died who were holy came out of their graves and appeared to many people.  They were resurrected! How did I miss that all these years of reading the gospel accounts?  I guess this just proves that no matter how many times you read the Bible, God always reveals more and more to you, bit by bit. I’m so glad that the … Continue reading The torn curtain
