Finding the Sacred

The failings of our country are not solely President Obama’s fault. They aren’t even the fault of Congress or the judicial system, although all three play a part in our collective depression.  The ones we really need to examine are the ones who look back at us when we look into a mirror — ourselves. It all started with  this article by conservative columnist Frank Turek in which he blames the church — that is, the entire body of Christ, no matter what flavor or denomination — for the current failings of our country. Specifically, he points to the way … Continue reading Finding the Sacred

This blog is good….er, propitious

Nearly every summer day I drive by our neighborhood elementary school on my way to and from various errands.  Each time I have to fight the urge to climb out of my car, stalk up to the marquee, and rearrange letters. Have a safe and fun summer.” is the message on the marquee. My contention with this sign is that both adjectives used are boring and bland.  In IEW, we called those kinds of words “banned words” and did not let our students use them.  Other banned adjectives were: bad, ugly, sad, mad, and so on.  If I had a … Continue reading This blog is good….er, propitious

The Homeschooling Hobos

Pondering the word “journey” brings an image to my mind of a hobo boy dressed in patched clothing, carrying his only belongings in a homemade sack tied to a stick.  He whistles as his feet scuffle the dusty road. Along the way he stops to examine a ladybug determined to stand her ground against a very rude ant. Apple Macintosh sold its first computer for $2495. One gallon of gas cost, on average, $1.19 Michael Jackson, hair on fire The Cosby Show #1 Song, “Owner of a Lonely Heart” And…not the least, your very own Everfaith, smiling in her thirteen year old glory. I kept a scrapbook for every year of school, from seventh grade all the way to graduation.  I dug out my seventh grade scrapbook … Continue reading Ye Olde Apple Tree

Roots

There’s a feeling of spring in my heart, and it’s only partly to do with the greening up I’m seeing outside in my neighborhood.  I stumbled on this creek on a walk yesterday afternoon and marveled at the green when just last week, the grass was still dead. Ugly. Brown, like the state of my heart just last week.  But after God sent me on a U-Turn, I feel refreshed in my spirit.  My efforts to be a more encouraging mother are paying off, but I can’t take the credit for it. Anything good in me comes from the Father … Continue reading Roots
