The Good, the Bad, and the Glutens

My gluten free experience has been far from typical.  Today marks Day 33 of this lifestyle, and these are things I have learned: 1. Farewell to the Drive Thru Queen.  I did not fully realize my addiction to the ease of fast food until I went gluten free and suddenly stopped eating it. I began planning to cook extra food at dinner so I would have leftovers for lunches. 2. Gluten is OmniPresent.  It really is in most products on supermarket shelves — except, of course, in fresh produce and meats, which quickly became my new cuisine. 3. Gluten Free … Continue reading The Good, the Bad, and the Glutens

Updated Prayer: Heart “Transplants” Needed

A heavy burden for prayer is on my heart. Last night I came across a prayer in the Bible that is so relevant for our times and challenges today that I experienced goosebumps and suddenly had the thought that I should write my own prayer. Daniel wrote his prayer (Daniel 9:1-19) around 538 BC after he learned from the prophet Jeremiah that Jerusalem would be desolate for seventy years.  (It was.  History confirms that they were defeated by the Babylonians.  Most of the people were carried away to Babylon.)  He was hurting for his country and his people. Like Daniel, … Continue reading Updated Prayer: Heart “Transplants” Needed

Boarding the (Old Fogey) Bus

When I was a little girl in the late 70s, the yellow school bus picked me up at dark thirty in the morning and bounced me around bumpy country roads before parking at the “bus barn” — a large parking lot next to the high school where the kids transferred from their neighborhood buses to the ones that would then drive them to their respective schools.  De-segretation meant the district no longer had neighborhood schools. But that’s not what I’m remembering today. What strikes me today is the weird feeling I had each morning as I sat in my bus … Continue reading Boarding the (Old Fogey) Bus

Breaking the Rules

Confession time.  I am a rule-follower.  This attribute made me popular with my teachers when I was a child..but not necessarily with my friends. :0)  Give me a list to check off, a procedure to follow, and a ruler to measure, and I am a happy girl. (Sidenote: this tendency to follow rules does not always ring true on the roadways when the ridiculously low speed limit on an interstate highway is set to 55mph and the rural highway right off the interstate has an insane speed limit of 70mph. Have you people tried driving the speed limit on I-45 … Continue reading Breaking the Rules

Spiritually, Snow White

My favorite fairy tale when I was a little girl was Snow White.  Being a native Texan, I didn’t know very much about snow.  But I liked the way the huntsman who had been sent by the Evil Stepmother to murder Snow White killed a wild animal in her place: The Huntsman did as the Queen asked – he took the little girl into the forest and prepared to kill her. ‘Please don’t kill me,’ cried Snow White, looking in terror at his big sharp knife. ‘I will run away into the forest and never come back again.’ The Huntsman … Continue reading Spiritually, Snow White
