Fear

Some people are afraid of spiders. Other people are afraid of heights. Some people are even afraid of very long words: Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia Thoughts of fears have been invading my mind lately, but not for the usual reasons. I am a very fearful person by nature. In fact, I’ve been known to be afraid of… Airplanes and flying Funerals Elevators (but not escalators) Spicy food Tomatoes, carrots, dairy, pecans, and now peanuts (make me ill) Roller coasters Long car trips The dentist Spiders Snakes Tornados Germs, especially stomach bug germs Nausea Body discomfort of any sort Monthly period (because it’s causing … Continue reading Fear

Do Nothing Day

Today is my do nothing day. You see, it’s Monday.  That means our new normal is for my daughter to be away all day in her once-a-week junior high Challenge A Classical Conversations class.  Oh, I have a list longer than Santa’s of things I could be doing around the house, like cleaning closets, organizing drawers, buying groceries, matching socks.  Thrilling, I know. Instead I find myself outside by the pool, soaking in some rays.  Gotta make that Vitamin D somehow, right?  Seriously, though, I’m trying to learn how to stop following all those rules that I set up for … Continue reading Do Nothing Day

Welcome to my Jungle

“Pain” is a 4-letter word for me these past few days. So it was with great interest that I listened to today’s sermon in church which was centered on Paul’s battle with the thorn in his flesh. He did not specify what his “thorn” was…some theologians speculate that he was going blind (because others wrote his letters and also read them to him).  The passage referenced was 2 Corinthians 12:7-10: So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. 8 Three different … Continue reading Welcome to my Jungle

Getting to the Other Side

I’ve never been to a “real” desert, but the images I’ve seen in books and media — and the way I’ve been whining so much about this Texas drought and 70 100+ degree days this year — convince me that I probably wouldn’t like it that much, especially if I had to travel through it on foot. Gritty sand sticking to the sweat between my toes? Yuck!  Searing heat with no prospect of shade? I’d be burned to a crisp in no time. I’ve been thinking lately about the desert, though, because I believe God is beckoning me on a … Continue reading Getting to the Other Side

Breaking the Rules

Confession time.  I am a rule-follower.  This attribute made me popular with my teachers when I was a child..but not necessarily with my friends. :0)  Give me a list to check off, a procedure to follow, and a ruler to measure, and I am a happy girl. (Sidenote: this tendency to follow rules does not always ring true on the roadways when the ridiculously low speed limit on an interstate highway is set to 55mph and the rural highway right off the interstate has an insane speed limit of 70mph. Have you people tried driving the speed limit on I-45 … Continue reading Breaking the Rules
