Breaking the Rules

Confession time.  I am a rule-follower.  This attribute made me popular with my teachers when I was a child..but not necessarily with my friends. :0)  Give me a list to check off, a procedure to follow, and a ruler to measure, and I am a happy girl. (Sidenote: this tendency to follow rules does not always ring true on the roadways when the ridiculously low speed limit on an interstate highway is set to 55mph and the rural highway right off the interstate has an insane speed limit of 70mph. Have you people tried driving the speed limit on I-45 … Continue reading Breaking the Rules

Spiritually, Snow White

My favorite fairy tale when I was a little girl was Snow White.  Being a native Texan, I didn’t know very much about snow.  But I liked the way the huntsman who had been sent by the Evil Stepmother to murder Snow White killed a wild animal in her place: The Huntsman did as the Queen asked – he took the little girl into the forest and prepared to kill her. ‘Please don’t kill me,’ cried Snow White, looking in terror at his big sharp knife. ‘I will run away into the forest and never come back again.’ The Huntsman … Continue reading Spiritually, Snow White

Looking on the Bright (i.e., sizzling) Side of Life

I don’t have to look at the seven day forecast to know what the weather’s going to be around here.  I already know that my back will “glisten” (that’s a nice way of saying “drip with sweat”) five nanoseconds after buckling myself into my car.  In the next seven days, the grass will get crispier, more leaves from our tree will flutter to the ground in defeat, and our pool will be warm enough to be classified as a very large hot tub. I write these predictions with certainty in hopes that perhaps the Lord will do what he often … Continue reading Looking on the Bright (i.e., sizzling) Side of Life

Ultimate Power Source

With this unrelenting heat, it’s hard to think about what life would be like if we didn’t have power.  Air conditioning is a balm to my soul when the thermometer in my car reads “113!”  I use power 24 hours a day: electric toothbrush, hair dryer, ceiling fan, air conditioning, oven, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, toaster, computer, iPad, iPhone, telephone, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, water heater, lighting, television, heating pad, air purifier, car…did I mention air conditioning?  Suffice it to say that electrical and/or gas power is an integral part of my life. As important as electricity has become to … Continue reading Ultimate Power Source

Spiritual Spinach

I have a major decision to make. Today an ultrasound revealed that I have adenomyosis, a diagnosis that was suspected but not confirmed until the imaging today.  As I understand it, adenomyosis is a condition in which the lining of the uterus begins invading the muscle of the uterine wall. When the body’s hormones signal this lining to shed, it sheds everywhere, including within the muscle wall.  This process causes intense pain and inflammation.  Finally I now understand why every month I feel as if I am giving birth all over again. Although this image is not from me, it … Continue reading Spiritual Spinach
